Before I begin, let me assure everyone that this is not a sponsored post. All my opinions are my own. I just really love this software!
Spring is just around the corner, and that means tax season is here!
I always find myself smiling more often at this time of the year. The snow has melted, the sun peeks out a little more often, and your annual tax refund is within sight!
There are multiple ‘traditional’ ways to file your taxes, whether it be through an accountant, a tax preparation company like H&R Block, or computer software such as TurboTax or UFile. The downside to all of these options is that they all cost money, which eats into your precious refund.
What if I told you that, if you’re a resident of Canada, you could file your taxes quickly, easily, without leaving the comfort of your home, in your pajamas if you so choose (as I did), at absolutely no cost to you?
Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Let me introduce SimpleTax. It’s tax software that you can access online for free, designed by three Canadians who recognized the need for an easier, more affordable way for their fellow citizens to file their taxes.
I used SimpleTax myself to file my boyfriend and I’s taxes this year, and I can assure you that it lives up to its name. The whole process of filing two returns only took me about an hour to complete.
Compared to other tax software I’ve used, SimpleTax is much cleaner, brighter, easier to follow and faster to use. Did I mention it’s free? Filing my taxes this year was truly a pleasure.
All you need to do is enter your information, and all the calculations are done for you. In fact, SimpleTax calculates your refund on the side of the page in real time as you enter your information, so you can see how much each entry either increases or decreases your refund.
Once you’re finished adding all your info, it will tell you if it’s detected any errors and what they are. It also prompts you to make sure you’re not forgetting any deductions, with the aid of a super handy drop-down list of all the possible deductions. This makes it so easy to find the ones that apply to you that you may not have thought of.
The greatest part to me was how simple it made filing my boyfriend and I’s taxes together. This is the first year we submitted our taxes jointly, and I was afraid that the process was going to be really complicated. SimpleTax made it a breeze.
It asks you at the beginning if you are planning to link your return with anyone else’s. All you need to do is enter in the name of the person you’re filing with, and SimpleTax walks you through how to complete their return under the same account so that it can link the returns together for you.
It also optimizes all your joint deductions and automatically allocates them to the person who will get the biggest refund back by claiming them. For example, I added the cost of our transit passes as a deduction in my own file, but after SimpleTax did its optimization calculations, it figured out that my boyfriend would get more out of that deduction and it automatically switched it over to his return instead. Pretty sweet, eh?
Once you’re all finished, SimpleTax files your return with the CRA for you, so you don’t have to worry about it. It also provides you with a PDF version of your return in case you want to save it or print it out.
Now, while this software is totally free if you so choose, they do ask you at this point if you would be willing to provide a donation to keep the service available next year. These guys get absolutely no funding from the government and rely on user donations to keep going. Consider throwing them a few bucks – you’ll still save a ton of money compared to any other tax service out there!
I really can’t say enough good things about SimpleTax. Check it out for yourself here, you won’t be disappointed.
