Many personal finance bloggers, myself included, use the term ‘journey to financial freedom’ to refer to our quest to master our money in order to live the lives we would if money was no longer an object.
Everyone’s heard the cliché, ‘it’s the journey that matters most, not the destination.’ And you know what? It’s true. It’s on your journey that you will learn the lessons you need to in order to finally achieve your goals, financial or otherwise. It’s your journey that’s going to help you evolve into the person you’ve always dreamed of being.
But you still need to know what your destination is. Without a destination, why would you set out on a journey in the first place? And how would you know when it was complete?
You may have a general idea of what you’d like to accomplish in life. For a lot of people, that’s as much as they ever know. After all, who knows what life will bring? How can you plan for the unexpected? Why not go with the flow and see where life takes you?
I’m not saying that perspective is wrong. It’s true that you never know what life is going to throw at you next. What you can do, though, is decide what is really, truly important to you, in order to ensure that every step you take on your journey is leading you in the right direction.
So I challenge you to close your eyes for a minute and envision your happy place. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Who is there with you? What do you spend your days doing?
Maybe you’re running your own successful business, finally making money for yourself instead of for somebody else.
Maybe you’re traveling the world with your partner, visiting places and learning about cultures you never imagined you would.
Maybe you’re at home with your family, spending your time nurturing the people you love most in the world instead of spending your time at work.
Remember, no dream is too big. This is your life you’re talking about, and perhaps even the lives of your loved ones. You only get one shot at it. Make it count.
Wherever your happy place is, that’s your destination. This is what you’re working towards on your journey to financial freedom. This is the purpose of your quest.
Picture this place every time you’re faced with a choice, and make your decision based on whether it will get you to your happy place slower or faster. It will be the most powerful motivation you can find.
Picture this place every time you feel like giving up on your dreams because they seem so out of reach. Know that the only way you’ll ever get there is to keep going, no matter how hard it gets, and that your dreams are worth the effort.
Picture this place every time you’re riddled with doubt about whether you are enough to make your dreams come true. Doubt is the silent killer of dreams. Believe in your dreams, and believe in yourself. You can do it.
Every hero needs a quest, and every quest needs a purpose. Be the hero of your own life. Challenge yourself to your own quest. Find your purpose, never give up on it, and watch as your dreams come true.
